DZ Bank is Germany’s second-largest lender and central institution for the cooperative banking sector (Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken). In 2026 it became a major MiCA-licensed retail crypto on-ramp for conservative German banking customers.
meinKrypto Platform (2026)
- MiCAR authorization: BaFin granted license December 2025 (bafin)
- Integration: Embedded wallet inside VR Banking App — not standalone crypto app
- Assets at launch: BTC, ETH, LTC, ADA
- Custody: boerse-stuttgart-digital; execution via EUWAX AG
- Development: Jointly built with Atruvia (cooperative IT provider)
- Opt-in model: Each of ~650 cooperative banks applies individually for MiCAR notification
Strategic Significance
Reverses 2021 shelving of cooperative crypto trading over risk concerns. MiCA compliance enabled conservative retail banks to become Europe’s largest potential crypto distribution channel (~80M customer relationships across cooperative + savings banks when including dekabank Sparkassen rollout).
DSGV labels crypto "highly speculative" with risk of total loss — regulatory compliance does not imply bank endorsement of asset class.
