Overview

Apple Reference Image is an opt-in iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max camera mode that creates cryptographically verifiable photographs. The Main camera sensor signs pixel data at capture; private-cloud-compute develops an unalterable reference JPEG comparable to a digital negative.

Key Features

  • Sensor-level cryptographic signing at capture time (not post-processing pipeline)
  • Post-quantum signatures and revocation mechanism for compromised sensors/photos
  • Side-by-side comparison with editable photo in Photos app
  • APIs in iOS/iPadOS/macOS 27 for third-party viewing

Limitations

  • Opt-in only; Main camera sensor exclusive
  • Capture unavailable at launch in EU and China; EU users can view/develop on iOS 27
  • Apple positioning vs c2pa metadata — capture-time vs metadata-only provenance
