Overview
Air Space Intelligence (ASI) is an AI software company that won an $875 million, 12-year FAA contract for air traffic management modernization, including the SMART (Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories) system.
FAA Contract (June 2026)
- FMDS (Flow Management Data and Services): New technological backbone of FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center
- SMART: AI enhancement analyzing schedules, weather, airport capacity, airspace conditions, and operational constraints to predict traffic flows and identify conflicts before departure
- Twelve companies bid; ASI selected
- Initial operations fall 2026, starting Washington D.C. metro area
- Full rollout over 12–24 months
SMART assists air traffic controllers with planning and prediction; it does not autonomously control aircraft.
