A zk-rollup is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum that batches transactions off-chain and submits cryptographic proofs (zero-knowledge proofs) to Layer 1 for verification, reducing gas costs while inheriting Ethereum security.

First-generation zk-rollups like Loopring lacked a virtual machine — no composability with Ethereum smart contracts. Modern zkevm solutions (zkSync, Scroll, StarkNet) offer full EVM compatibility, surpassing early pioneers.

Loopring shut down DEX June 29, 2026 citing lack of adoption, no VM/composability, and zkEVM competition. TVL ~$8M (99% decline). Trustless exit mechanism disabled for batch distribution.
