Definition

Passkeys are FIDO-standard cryptographic credentials stored on user devices, enabling phishing-resistant authentication via biometrics (fingerprint, face) or device PIN — replacing passwords and SMS OTPs.

Payment Applications

Visa Payment Passkey (VPP) — device-based card-not-present authentication:

  • Links Visa card to consumer device via Visa Token Service
  • One-time registration; consistent checkout across merchants
  • Satisfies two-factor authentication requirements (e.g., RBI India framework)

July 2026: India Launch

visa launched VPP in India (July 2, 2026) with IDFC FIRST Bank; merchants include Myntra, Paytm, MakeMyTrip. Positions passkeys as foundation for agentic commerce consent flows atop 100% e-commerce card tokenisation.
