Definition

Lockdown Mode is an optional openai security setting in chatgpt that restricts outbound network connections to mitigate prompt-injection-based data exfiltration. Expanded to all personal and self-serve Business accounts June 4, 2026.

Restricted Capabilities

When enabled:

  • Live web browsing (cached content only)
  • Deep Research and shopping research
  • Agent Mode
  • Canvas networking and external network requests
  • File downloads from external sources
  • Image retrieval from web

Manually uploaded files remain accessible. Lockdown Mode and Developer Mode are mutually exclusive.

Key Points

  • Enable via Settings → Security → Advanced Security
  • Does not prevent prompt injections entering model context — blocks outbound exfiltration paths only
  • No effect on codex network access
  • Enterprise admins enforce via custom RBAC roles
  • Paired with “Elevated Risk” labels across ChatGPT, Atlas, and Codex
