Lockdown Mode is an optional openai security setting in chatgpt that restricts outbound network connections to mitigate prompt-injection-based data exfiltration. Expanded to all personal and self-serve Business accounts June 4, 2026.
Restricted Capabilities
When enabled:
- Live web browsing (cached content only)
- Deep Research and shopping research
- Agent Mode
- Canvas networking and external network requests
- File downloads from external sources
- Image retrieval from web
Manually uploaded files remain accessible. Lockdown Mode and Developer Mode are mutually exclusive.
Key Points
- Enable via Settings → Security → Advanced Security
- Does not prevent prompt injections entering model context — blocks outbound exfiltration paths only
- No effect on codex network access
- Enterprise admins enforce via custom RBAC roles
- Paired with “Elevated Risk” labels across ChatGPT, Atlas, and Codex
