Definition

KP-FHR (Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High Temperature Reactor) is a non-light-water reactor technology using molten salt coolant and TRISO fuel. Operates at high temperatures under relatively low pressure compared to conventional light-water SMRs.

Key Points

  • Hermes 2 demo plant: 50 MWe, Oak Ridge, Tennessee — grid-connected to TVA
  • First non-water-cooled U.S. reactor construction permit in over 50 years (2023)
  • High-temperature heat usable for power generation, industrial heat, and hydrogen production
  • samsung-c-t investing up to $100M in commercial deployment pathway (Sep 2026)
  • Target commissioning: 2030–2031 for Hermes 2
