Overview
FTL OS is an open-source cloud operating system project by Seiya Nuta where each container runs a userspace OS library on a minimal kernel, aiming for VM-like isolation with Linux binary compatibility. The project targets cloud-native workloads and released v0.1.0 in October 2026 with async Rust/Tokio support.
Recent Developments
- 2026-10-03: v0.1.0 released with multi-threaded Tokio, improved Linux compatibility (threads, futex, epoll, signals, TTY, brk, mmap), virtio-mmio, QEMU microVM support, and SMEP/SMAP hardening (2026-10-03-ftl-v0-1-0-seiya-blog)
- 2026-10-03: ftl-os.org deployed on FTL running a Tokio HTTP server on Google Compute Engine, demonstrating the userspace-OS model in production (2026-10-03-ftl-v0-1-0-seiya-blog)
- 2026-10-03: Project publicly introduced as a new operating system model for cloud containers (2026-10-03-ftl-new-operating-system-for-clouds)
v0.1.0 is an early release — production-readiness and performance claims should be treated as project aspirations until independent benchmarks emerge.
