Barclays announced a headcount reduction of about 5,000 roles (~5% of 93,000 global staff) alongside expanded AI use. Roughly 1,000 cuts are already done; 4,000 more spread through the year, heavily back-office retail banking in the UK and India.
CEO CS Venkatakrishnan tied the move to modernization and technology investment; he called AI the “icing on the cake” requiring infrastructure modernization first. Barclays recently expanded Anthropic Claude for software development and legacy modernization.
The bank is ending a three-year cost program focused on retail banking, reporting ~£600m savings this year with another £300m expected before year-end. Q3 pre-tax profit was £2.3bn (+12% YoY). NAB, HSBC, and Deutsche Bank made similar AI-plus-layoffs announcements over the past 18 months.
