A judge ordered Meta to pay 5,000 penalty.
The case involved Meta’s handling of a third-party app linked to the Cambridge Analytica breach, data privacy policies, and efforts to mitigate misinformation, per The Wall Street Journal. Cambridge Analytica, rooted in British defense contractor SLC Group, worked on the 2016 Trump campaign and other influence operations.
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said at a press conference the award could fund school construction for a century. Meta chief legal officer C.J. Mahoney said the company will appeal, arguing the ruling makes doing business in New Mexico nearly impossible and imposes a tax on speech.
