Waymo received approval to join Ontario’s automated vehicle pilot. The company will manually map Toronto streets, then test with safety drivers, remove operators, and eventually open public robotaxi rides—its standard city rollout playbook.
Waymo now operates commercially in 15 U.S. cities and tests in London and Tokyo. Toronto is its northernmost market, posing winter-weather challenges. Waymo partnered with Element Fleet Management for local fleet operations and expects hundreds of jobs in maintenance, validation driving, and customer service.
