RyanL (Bitwarden), October 9, 2026:
Starting in the next release, Bitwarden apps published to app stores will be commercially licensed builds. No user action required; apps work as today.
- Bitwarden remains committed to open source security and transparency
- GPLv3 OSS licensed version continues on GitHub
- All current features available in both versions (staff later clarified “current” may not include future features)
- License details on GitHub
- Free forever plan unchanged
- Not going closed-source; forking still allowed
- Self-hosting unchanged; licensing targets repackaging/reselling
- Download page and portable desktop builds will use commercial license
Staff Q&A: some future components and features may be commercial-license-only, evaluated case-by-case; commercial-licensed code remains viewable on GitHub. Community concern compares trajectory to other “open core” shifts (MinIO cited).
