postmarketOS began in 2017 with the goal of keeping smartphones useful for 10 years. Built on Alpine Linux, the project announced at its September 27, 2026 conference that it will now be called Nura.

After an 18-month process with more than 300 suggestions, the team chose Nura — proposed by community member Davide Depau — and filed a trademark application. Nura is shortened from nuraghe, ancient granite structures in Sardinia that have stood for thousands of years.

The website moved to nura.eco. Users may still see postmarketOS in parts of the software while contributors update remaining references. PINE64 and other hardware partners ship devices with the OS pre-installed.
