OpenAI confirmed it has been engaging with Anthropic and Google about working together on AI safety concerns.

Discussions have been ongoing since Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis released a July proposal calling for a U.S.-led “Standards Body” — a public-private partnership with federal oversight akin to FINRA.

The three companies are fierce competitors but face intense pressure to address mounting AI safety concerns. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently urged slowing frontier model development; Hassabis and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed support.

Chris Lehane published a blog post saying OpenAI will work with other companies on voluntary industry-led standards, with or without government support. “Any industry-led standards would complement — not replace — mandatory federal safeguards.”

Lehane supports the FRONTIER Act’s independent verification provision but has not endorsed the entire bill.
