OpenAI is working on AI safety measures with Anthropic and Google DeepMind, escalating industry efforts to address concerns about economic and security threats from advanced AI.

Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s global policy chief, said engagement with competitors had been underway for several weeks. Lehane said OpenAI does not believe an antitrust waiver is needed for safety coordination.

The talks follow Demis Hassabis’s July proposal for a U.S.-led standards body for frontier AI, modeled on FINRA-style self-regulation with federal oversight.

OpenAI supports the FRONTIER Act provision requiring independent verification organizations (IVOs) to assess qualifying frontier labs. Lehane spoke to lawmakers in Washington on September 15, 2026.

No formal safety pact or development slowdown agreement has been announced.
