Mastercard, Borderless test shared identity checks for stablecoin transfers

Mastercard and stablecoin orchestration network Borderless will run a pilot exploring how Mastercard’s Crypto Credential standards-based framework can bring greater trust to cross-border stablecoin payments.
Pilot goals
- Test how Mastercard’s framework provides assurance signals that participants can incorporate into approval, compliance, and risk processes
- Seek new governance signals that reduce friction in cross-border stablecoin payments
- Crypto Credential acts as a governance/verification layer; Mastercard will not process or settle funds in the pilot (per Borderless CEO Kevin Lehtiniitty)
Rationale
Lehtiniitty: Compliance is a major friction point. “Correspondent banking solved this decades ago: originating compliance trusted downstream, no re-execution at every counterparty. Mastercard is applying that model to digital asset payments.”
Context
- Comes just after Mastercard completed acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK (deal valued at up to ~$1.8 billion; completion announced ~August 3)
- In June, Mastercard announced plans to expand settlement capabilities (intraday, weekend, holiday) including stablecoins such as USDC, PYUSD, USDG, USDP, RLUSD, and SoFiUSD
