Wells Fargo (WFC) will offer tokenized deposits for select corporate and commercial clients later this year (fall 2026 rollout), starting with round-the-clock USD to GBP transactions on the bank’s proprietary blockchain.

Product framing

  • Tokenized deposits = blockchain representation of commercial bank money; unlike stablecoins, remain bank deposits with stated same regulatory protections and deposit-insurance eligibility as existing products
  • System will automatically route eligible payments through tokenized deposits when speed/flexibility improves, without changing the client interface
  • 24/7/365 move, program, and settle described as capabilities “when fully deployed
  • Broader rollout through 2027: more clients, countries, currencies
  • Future features: conditional payments via smart contracts; possible in-house custodial wallets and inter-chain connectivity
  • Bank said it can integrate with a shared tokenized-deposit network being developed by The Clearing House (per WSJ citation in CoinDesk)

Competitive context

Joins JPMorgan and Citi, which already operate institutional tokenized-deposit services amid stablecoin pressure on bank deposit bases. Follows Wells Fargo’s March trademark application for WFUSD. Prior work includes Wells Fargo Digital Cash (2019) and FX settlement with HSBC on a shared blockchain.
