Exclusive: Meta’s Zuckerberg says AI agent tech progressing slower than expected

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged at an internal town hall on July 2, 2026 that AI agents had not progressed as quickly as expected over the last four months. The company laid off about 10% of its workforce and reassigned roughly 7,000 employees to AI-focused teams in May. Zuckerberg said the restructuring was not as clean as it could have been and that bets on the new structure have not come to fruition yet. He expects more significant benefits from AI investments within three to six months. CTO Andrew Bosworth said a review of a data security incident with mouse-tracking software indicated no employee data was included in AI training.
