June 30, 2026 — AWS announced a dedicated Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization backed by a $1 billion investment. AWS FDE embeds frontier teams with purpose-built agents directly inside customer organizations.

Three key differentiators per AWS:

  1. Agentic-first — uses agentic AI to build agentic solutions
  2. Timeline compression — deployments from months to days via 45-day sprints
  3. Customer self-sufficiency — customers leave with agentic systems, knowledge graphs, runbooks, and trained internal champions

AWS FDE uses the AI-Driven Development Lifecycle (AI-DLC) — AI-powered execution with human oversight and dynamic team collaboration. Each customer project compounds intelligence for the next.

Early customers: Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, NBA, NFL, Ricoh, Southwest Airlines. Focus sectors include financial services, healthcare, and government where security and governance are non-negotiable.

Francessca Vasquez, VP of Frontier AI Engineering and Services, leads the initiative. AWS plans thousands of embedded experts, hiring externally and moving internal staff. The $1 billion represents internal Amazon resource allocation, not an external joint venture.
