Austria is pushing the European Union to consider hosting Anthropic PBC within its borders to counter US efforts to block foreigners from using its most advanced artificial-intelligence models.
Member states should explore “the strategic establishment and participation of Anthropic within the European Union,” Austrian State Secretary for Digitalization Alexander Pröll said in a letter to European Commission Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen.
The proposal follows US Commerce Department export controls issued June 12, 2026, requiring Anthropic to suspend foreign access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models. Pröll framed the initiative as securing frontier AI access with legal certainty rather than depending on US policy decisions.
The letter does not specify whether Austria envisages a European subsidiary, data-residency arrangement, equity stake, or looser partnership. Pröll acknowledged widespread skepticism about feasibility.
The European Commission had not publicly responded as of June 28, 2026.
