US Senate passes housing supply bill featuring CBDC ban in 85-5 vote

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a comprehensive housing legislation that also seeks to ban central bank digital currency (CBDC), passed the Senate vote on Monday.

According to the Senate’s official website, H.R. 6644 passed by an 85-5 vote. The bill contains a housing affordability package to boost housing supply in the U.S. and make it more affordable by preventing corporate landlords from dominating the market.

The bill includes language banning the Federal Reserve from issuing or creating a CBDC or any digital asset substantially similar to a CBDC, effective until Dec. 31, 2030.

The current Trump administration has taken a firm stance against CBDCs. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated that CBDCs are clearly off the table, and that the administration will focus on getting the digital asset-focused CLARITY Act across the finish line.
