Ona Joins OpenAI to Power Persistent Codex Agent Execution

June 11, 2026 — Ona announced that OpenAI will acquire the company to bring secure cloud execution and orchestration into the Codex ecosystem.

From Gitpod to Ona

Ona was formerly known as Gitpod, the cloud development environment platform that helped 2 million developers move software development from local machines into reproducible cloud workspaces. The rebrand to Ona reflected a pivot toward agentic cloud execution beyond traditional IDE workflows.

Persistent Agent Workspaces

Ona’s technology provides secure, persistent environments where agents access tools, systems, and context needed to make progress over time. Agents continue working inside a customer’s cloud environment even when laptops are closed.

Customer-Controlled Execution

Organizations control where agents run, credential scoping, activity logging, and security boundaries. OpenAI provides intelligence and orchestration; customers retain infrastructure and data control.

Leadership

Johannes Landgraf, Co-Founder and CEO of Ona, will join OpenAI after closing to work with the Codex team. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval; both companies remain independent until closing.
