Coinbase for Agents lets AI assistants trade crypto and move money
Coinbase Global Inc. launched Coinbase for Agents, a standalone tool that lets AI agents trade cryptocurrency, pay for services, and operate with financial autonomy from assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT.
Separate agent account
The product is not a feature inside the Coinbase app but a separate account built for agents. Users connect an existing Coinbase account, set spending limits, and the agent can begin transacting on their behalf. Coinbase pitches it as potentially the only account an agent will ever need.
Trading and payments
At launch, agents can trade crypto spot markets and derivatives from an isolated portfolio or the user’s main balance. Coinbase will add equities, prediction markets, and other asset classes over time. Trading draws on Coinbase Advanced via natural language.
Payments lean on x402, an open standard for machine-to-machine payments Coinbase originated. Agents can pay for paywalled research, data APIs, and on-demand compute without logins or subscriptions — e.g., pay cents for paywalled data, synthesize it, and execute a trade.
Stablecoins and industry context
Coinbase prefers stablecoins as the payment rail because they are programmable, global, and operate continuously. The company cited projections that agents could account for a significant share of e-commerce by 2030, and noted that more than half of internet traffic is already non-human.
Coinbase for Agents went live June 11, 2026, with support documentation for connecting agents at launch.
