Coinbase launches tool to let AI agents manage trading and payments
Coinbase on Thursday launched Coinbase for Agents, giving AI agents like ChatGPT or Claude the ability to trade and transact directly on users’ behalf — a bet that AI agents will become a primary interface for financial activity.
Trading capabilities
Coinbase for Agents initially allows agents to execute crypto trades using natural language instructions. Customers can prompt agents to rebalance portfolios, identify trading opportunities, execute strategies, and manage positions over time. The company plans to expand to stocks and prediction markets.
x402 machine-to-machine payments
Using Coinbase’s x402 machine-to-machine payments protocol, agents can pay directly for digital services such as paywalled research, data APIs, and on-demand compute without a human in the loop — and execute trades based on those insights. Coinbase sees this as a precursor to agentic shopping, where agents browse, find deals, select, and purchase on users’ behalf.
x402 adoption metrics
The x402 protocol was created in May 2025 and has seen more than 100 million transactions since its debut, according to Coinbase AI product lead Lincoln Murr. Approximately 157,000 agents have acted as buyers using the protocol in the past 30 days, per x402scan.com.
Integration
Agents connect via MCP tooling including @coinbase/payments-mcp and @coinbase/cdp-cli, linking to user Coinbase accounts with spending limits and isolated portfolio options.
