Visa partners with OpenAI to let AI agents make payments for users

Visa Inc. struck a deal with OpenAI to let AI agents make payments for users, bringing one of the world’s largest payment networks into ChatGPT’s push toward agentic commerce.

Announced at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco on June 10, 2026. Visa’s payment tools integrate into OpenAI products, giving developers and merchants a way to accept Visa transactions initiated by AI agents rather than manual checkout.

Visa supplies network, tokenization, and risk capabilities. Payments run within user-defined permissions — spending caps, merchant categories, required approvals — using tokenized Visa credentials with real-time authorization and fraud monitoring. Visa handles chargebacks and refunds.

Visa Intelligent Commerce and Codex

The collaboration sits within Visa Intelligent Commerce. The companies will explore enterprise uses including developer experiences powered by OpenAI’s Codex coding agent — Codex agents could buy inference, APIs, or developer services autonomously within user-set limits.
