Florida is the first U.S. state to sue OpenAI over safety concerns. The June 1, 2026 civil lawsuit is separate from Uthmeier’s April criminal investigation.
The complaint alleges OpenAI’s “careless introduction” of ChatGPT led to increased murders and suicides, and that Florida minors “have become addicted to a tool that feigns human compassion to collect their data with no parental oversight.”
Florida seeks court orders restricting data collection from minors and requiring OpenAI to stop misrepresenting or failing to warn of ChatGPT risks.
OpenAI has maintained it designs systems with safety protocols and is not responsible for crimes committed by users.
