Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed suit against OpenAI on June 1, 2026, making Florida the first state to sue OpenAI and Sam Altman over product design and safety.
The 83-page complaint alleges four counts of deceptive and unfair trade practices, two counts of negligence, two counts of product liability violations, fraudulent misrepresentation, and public nuisance. Uthmeier seeks to hold Altman personally liable for “reckless and willful conduct” and “utter disregard for the risk to human life.”
The suit claims ChatGPT presents dangers including addiction, cognitive decline, suicide, and violence. It references alleged ChatGPT involvement in the FSU mass shooting and USF double murder — as unproven allegations in the complaint.
Uthmeier opened a separate criminal investigation in April 2026 after reviewing chat logs between ChatGPT and FSU gunman Phoenix Ikner.
