The state of Florida sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on June 1, 2026, accusing the company of ignoring safety warnings and releasing ChatGPT while knowing it was harmful to users.
The lawsuit filed in state court accuses OpenAI of violating product liability laws, negligence, and deceptive and unfair trade practices. Florida seeks civil penalties and a court order blocking collection of certain data from users under 13 without parental consent.
This is separate from an ongoing criminal investigation Uthmeier opened in late April 2026 into ChatGPT’s alleged role in the Florida State University mass shooting.
