Toyota and Woven by Toyota Unveil AI Technologies
Toyota and Woven by Toyota introduced advanced AI technologies designed to drive “Kakezan”—their approach to creating multiplied societal impact through cross-industry collaboration at Toyota Woven City.
Woven City AI Vision Engine
The companies deployed the Woven City AI Vision Engine, described as “a large-scale AI foundation model that enables the city to understand and respond to real-world conditions in real time.” This vision language model integrates visual, behavioral, and environmental data from cameras, mobility systems, and user inputs to identify patterns, detect risks, and coordinate system responses for improved safety. According to the MVBench Leaderboard, it ranks among the world’s leading vision language models.
The technology is based on Japanese innovation and demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to building intelligent infrastructure for connected cities. The system continuously processes data to enable real-time responsiveness to urban conditions.
Business Applications
The technology already supports real-world use cases, including a proof-of-concept project with UCC Japan Co., Ltd., one of Woven City’s resident innovators. The companies plan expanding deployment beyond the city to other Japanese municipalities and international partners.
Supporting Technologies
The Integrated ANZEN System combines the AI Vision Engine with Behavior AI and Drive Sync Assist capabilities, enabling coordinated safety improvements for pedestrians and drivers through data analysis from vehicles and traffic infrastructure.
Key Features:
- Real-time visual understanding and environmental analysis
- Integration with mobility systems and IoT sensors
- Risk detection and automatic response coordination
- Cross-industry applicability beyond automotive
Strategic Significance
This announcement marks a major step in Toyota’s AI infrastructure strategy, positioning the company as a leader in smart city technologies alongside its traditional automotive business. The deployment in Woven City serves as a test bed for technologies that could be adapted across urban environments globally.
The MVBench ranking places this vision language model in the top tier of AI capabilities, competing with models from Google, OpenAI, and other frontier AI labs.
